The first setting of the story is a metal box, which
functions as an elevator. It sends
supplies and food every week and a new person every month up into the
glade. The next setting is the glade,
which is the center of the maze. It is
approximately three football fields in length and is divided into four sections—the
Gardens, the Blood House, the Homestead, and the Dead-heads. The Gardens consist of crops and farm
animals. The Blood House is where the
animals are slaughtered for food. The
Homestead is a building which functions as a commons area. Some people sleep in the Homestead, but
others sleep in the fields. The
Dead-heads is a forest. The forest gets
thicker and darker as one goes deeper into it, and in the forest is a
cemetery.
