Are We There Yet?

1.  What is the purpose of the Maze, and why is it there?

Where Are We Again?

The first setting of the story is a metal box, which functions as an elevator.  It sends supplies and food every week and a new person every month up into the glade.  The next setting is the glade, which is the center of the maze.  It is approximately three football fields in length and is divided into four sections—the Gardens, the Blood House, the Homestead, and the Dead-heads.  The Gardens consist of crops and farm animals.  The Blood House is where the animals are slaughtered for food.  The Homestead is a building which functions as a commons area.  Some people sleep in the Homestead, but others sleep in the fields.  The Dead-heads is a forest.  The forest gets thicker and darker as one goes deeper into it, and in the forest is a cemetery. 

 

Who Did It?

The author is James Dashner, and he was born In Georgia on November 26, 1972.  As a child, he loved to read.  He attended Brigham Young University in Utah, where he majored in Accounting.  He worked in the field of finance after he graduated from college, but he decided to try writing.  His first book was A Door in the Woods, which was published on June 1, 2003.  Since that time, he has written several books for teenagers and young adults, including series such as The Thirteenth Reality and The Maze Runner.  His book, The Maze Runner, was on the New York Times Best Seller List for a year, and it is scheduled to be released as a motion picture in September 2014.  He lives in Utah with his wife and four children.

And Then What?

Based on the title, the book is about people who are in a maze and who are running to get out before something bad happens to them.  The characters might not know one another because, in the first paragraph, Thomas did not know where he was.  Also, in the first paragraph, it is stated that Thomas was “hoping his eyes would soon adjust to the darkness.”  This clues the reader into the fact that Thomas just got into the metal room in the first paragraph.
